Car Won’t Start: Reading What It Actually Does

The short version

  • Diagnose by what the car does, not by what you think is wrong. Four behaviours cover almost everything: nothing at all, a click, cranking that will not fire, and starting then dying.
  • Nothing at all and a single heavy click both point at current — the battery, its terminals, the earth strap or the starter — and the two are separated by whether the dashboard lights survive the attempt.
  • Cranking that will not fire means the engine is turning but is missing fuel, spark, compression or permission. Permission is the one people forget: an immobiliser that does not recognise the key will crank the engine and never let it run.
  • Starting and then dying almost always means the engine ran on something that was withdrawn a second later, which is a different fault family from a car that never fires at all.
  • If you are buying, the cold start is the most diagnostic single event of the entire visit. Ask for it in advance, in writing, and put your hand on the bonnet when you arrive.
  • A car that is already warm when you get there has had its most revealing minute removed. That is not proof of anything, but it is a question, and it should be asked out loud.

A car that will not start is a small emergency with a large number of possible causes, and the usual way people go about it — guessing a part and then testing the guess by buying it — is both the slowest route and the most expensive one.

Four different faults share one description. Which of these the car actually does is the single most useful thing to establish before anyone opens the bonnet — and it is why arriving to find the engine already warm has cost you the test.

There is a better order. The car is already telling you which family of faults it is in, through what it does when you turn the key. That behaviour narrows the field enormously before anybody opens the bonnet, and it costs nothing to observe. This page is organised around it, because that is the information a driver actually has at the moment they need it.

The second half of this page is written for a different reader: somebody standing next to a car they are thinking of buying. For that reader the no-start question inverts. You are not trying to make a car start. You are trying to find out whether the one in front of you struggles — and there is exactly one moment in a viewing when the car will tell you honestly.

Start with what the car does

Turn the key or press the button, and pay attention to three things in the first two seconds: what the dashboard does, what you hear, and whether the engine turns over.

Everything that follows expands one of those rows. Work out which row you are in first, because the wrong row leads to the wrong parts.

Nothing at all

No dashboard, no interior light, no click, no fuel pump hum from behind the rear seat. The car is a shape in a driveway.

This is a supply problem, and the useful thing about it is that supply problems are the cheapest family on the list to eliminate. In rough order of how often they turn out to be the answer:

  • The battery is flat. Left with a door ajar, a boot light on, a dashcam wired to permanent live, or simply a battery at the end of its service life that finally went during a cold night.
  • A terminal is loose or corroded. The furry white or blue-green deposit on a post is an insulator. A terminal that can be rotated by hand is not making a connection you can rely on under starting current.
  • The earth strap has failed. Current has to get back as well as out. The braided strap from the battery or the engine to the body corrodes where it bolts down, and the resulting fault mimics a dead battery precisely.
  • A main fuse or fusible link has gone. Less common, but it produces a total blackout that looks exactly like a disconnected battery.
  • The battery is not the battery you think. On many modern vehicles it lives in the boot or under a seat, and a jump lead attached to the terminals under the bonnet is being attached to a remote jump post rather than to the battery.

The one distinction worth drawing here: a battery that has been slowly killed by an electrical drain and a battery that has simply worn out behave identically in the driveway and differently over the following month. A click, or a burst of clicking

Something answered. That is more information than it sounds like, because it means the ignition switch, the immobiliser’s first stage and the starter relay circuit all did their jobs.

Rapid clicking — a fast chatter, often in time with the dash lights dimming and recovering — is the solenoid pulling in, collapsing the voltage, dropping out, and pulling in again. It is a current problem, and it is the battery or its connections until proven otherwise. This is the classic symptom of a battery with enough charge to run the dashboard and nowhere near enough to turn an engine.

One solid click and then silence is a different message. The solenoid has engaged and held, and the motor has not turned. The candidates are a heavy-current fault between the battery and the starter, a starter motor that has failed internally, or an engine that will not rotate. That last one is rare and serious, and it is worth eliminating before you buy a starter: with the ignition off, an engine that cannot be turned by hand at the crankshaft pulley is telling you something considerably more expensive than a starter.

Two field observations that carry real diagnostic weight:

  • Try it in neutral as well as park. On an automatic, a car that starts in neutral but not in park has a neutral safety or transmission range switch fault, not a starter fault. This is a common, cheap and entirely invisible cause that people replace starters over.
  • Watch the dashboard during the attempt. Lights that stay bright while nothing happens point away from the battery. Lights that collapse to nothing point straight back at it.

It cranks but will not fire

The engine is turning at a normal speed and never catches. The battery, the starter and the heavy-current circuit have just demonstrated that they are fine, so the entire supply family is off the table.

What is left is what an engine needs to run: fuel, spark, compression, and permission. Take them in that order, because that is roughly the order of likelihood on a car of ordinary age.

Fuel. With the ignition switched on but the engine not cranking, most cars prime the fuel pump for a couple of seconds — a soft whirr from the rear of the car. Silence there is a strong pointer to the pump, its relay, or its fuse. Also worth ruling out, without embarrassment, is an empty tank: gauges fail, and they fail reading something plausible.

Spark. Coils, plugs, and the crankshaft or camshaft position sensors that tell the module when to fire them. A failed crank position sensor is a classic no-fire fault precisely because the engine cranks perfectly — the starter does not need the sensor, and the ignition system cannot work without it. These sensors are also notorious for failing when hot and recovering when cold, which is the intermittent no-start discussed further down.

Compression. A snapped timing belt or a jumped timing chain removes the relationship between the crankshaft and the valves. The engine will crank — often faster and more freely than usual, which is the tell — and will never fire. On an interference engine this is also the point at which a no-start becomes an engine rebuild, which is why the belt interval is one of the few maintenance items worth being inflexible about. Permission. See the next section, because it deserves its own.

One diesel-specific note: a diesel that cranks and will not fire in cold weather may have a glow plug or glow plug relay fault, and that fault is invisible in summer. If you are buying a diesel out of season, ask directly whether it has ever been slow to start on a cold morning.

The key, the immobiliser and the light that tells you

Modern cars will not run for an engine they do not recognise, and the failure mode this produces is specific and widely misread.

The immobiliser reads a transponder in the key. If it does not get an answer it likes, it disables fuel or spark. On most systems it does not disable the starter, so the car cranks with complete confidence and never fires — which sends people straight down the fuel-pump route.

The tell is on the dashboard. Most cars carry a security or immobiliser telltale — a car outline with a padlock or a key symbol. Normally it illuminates briefly at ignition on and goes out. If it stays lit, flashes continuously, or flashes while you crank, the car is telling you it does not accept the key.

Causes range from the trivial to the tedious: a flat coin cell in the key fob on systems that need the fob powered, a spare key that was never properly programmed, a damaged transponder in a key that has been dropped, a failed antenna ring around the ignition barrel, or a security module that has lost its synchronisation after a battery disconnection.

The two-key rule for buyers. Ask to see both keys, and start the car with each of them. A seller who has one key is not necessarily hiding anything, but a second key on a modern car is not a convenience item — it is a component with a replacement cost, and on some makes that cost is disproportionate to the value of the car. Test the spare rather than accepting that it works. A spare that turns the lock but will not start the engine is a spare that has not been programmed, and you have just discovered a cost the advert did not mention.

It starts, then dies

The engine fires, runs for a second or two, and stops. This is a distinct family and it is worth separating from “will not fire”, because it means everything needed to start an engine is present and something needed to keep one running is not.

The usual explanations:

  • The immobiliser again, in its other behaviour. Some systems allow the engine to start and then cut fuel immediately. A car that fires and dies in the same way every single time, with the security light behaving oddly, is a strong candidate.
  • Fuel delivery that cannot sustain load. A weak pump or a blocked filter may supply enough for the initial start and not enough to hold an idle.
  • A large unmetered air leak. The module can compensate for a leak within a range; outside it, the idle collapses as soon as the enrichment used for starting is withdrawn.
  • Idle air control or throttle body faults. On drive-by-wire cars, a heavily carboned throttle body can hold a cold idle only while the start enrichment lasts.
  • A charging system that has already failed. A car that is running solely on a jump start and dies the moment the leads come off is not a starting fault at all — it is an alternator that has stopped charging, and the flat battery was the symptom rather than the cause.

That last one matters more than its position on the list suggests, because it is the fault most often misdiagnosed as a dead battery. A new battery fitted to a car with a failed alternator will get you a few days and then leave you in the same position, out of pocket.

The intermittent no-start, which is the worst kind

A car that fails to start once a fortnight, always in the rain, or only after a long motorway run, is harder to diagnose than a car that never starts at all — and it is far more likely to be the one you are shown at a viewing, because it started this morning.

Intermittent no-starts cluster around a few causes. Heat-sensitive sensors, particularly crank and cam position sensors, which fail when hot and recover after twenty minutes of cooling. Connections that are marginal rather than broken, which conduct until vibration or moisture tips them over. Fuel pumps in the early stages of failure, which start reliably when cold and struggle when the tank is low and the pump is hot. Immobiliser antennas and worn ignition switches, which work until they do not.

The important consequence for a buyer is that none of these will appear during a viewing, and none of them will show as a lit warning lamp afterwards either. What they may leave behind is a stored or pending fault code in a module’s memory. That is one of several reasons the electronic scan in a proper pre-purchase inspection queries every module for historic faults rather than reading only the codes currently illuminating something.

The cold start is the diagnostic event of the visit

Here is the part of this page written specifically for somebody buying rather than repairing, and it is the single most valuable minute available to you.

An engine reveals more in the first fifteen seconds from stone cold than in the following hour. Everything that is marginal is marginal at that moment and at no other:

  • Cranking speed. A tired battery, a high-resistance connection or a lazy starter shows as a slow, laboured first crank and then hides completely once the engine is warm and the battery has recovered.
  • Time to fire. Extended cranking from cold points at fuel pressure that bleeds away when the car sits, or at sensors reading out of tolerance at low temperature.
  • The first firing. Blue smoke on the initial start that clears within seconds is the classic valve stem seal signature. Thirty seconds later it is gone and it will not return that day.
  • Cold knock and rattle. Piston slap, a timing chain tensioner that takes a second to pressurise, a noisy hydraulic lifter — all of them are loudest cold and most of them quieten as oil pressure builds and clearances close up.
  • Idle behaviour. A rough, hunting or high idle that settles after a minute is a fault that will still be there next winter.
  • Exhaust smoke and steam. Steam that clears is condensation. White smoke that persists and smells sweet is coolant, and that is a different conversation entirely.

Every item on that list is invisible on a warm engine. Not harder to see — invisible. A seller who starts the car before you arrive has not necessarily done it deliberately, but the effect is the same: the most informative event of the visit has already happened, without you.

How to secure the cold start. Ask for it in the message that arranges the viewing, so there is a written record: please do not start or move the car before I arrive, I want to see it started from cold. Arrive on time. Put the back of your hand on the bonnet and on the exhaust before you say hello. Then ask the seller to hand you the key and let you turn it yourself, and watch the dashboard rather than the engine while you do — every warning lamp should illuminate and then go out.

When you arrive and the bonnet is warm

It happens, and the right response is neither to ignore it nor to accuse anybody.

Say it plainly: the engine is warm, I had asked to see it from cold, can we come back to it? Then watch what the seller does with that. The reasonable answers exist and are easy to give — they moved it out of a garage, they had to fetch it from another address, they forgot. The unreasonable answer is the one that tries to persuade you the cold start does not matter, because anybody selling a car knows perfectly well that it does.

Your options, in descending order of preference:

  • Come back another day and start it yourself. Best outcome, costs one more trip, and a seller who resists a second viewing on a car they have described as faultless has told you something.
  • Leave it standing for as long as you are there. Do the paperwork, the history check, the panel gaps, the tyres, the boot floor and the road test first, then restart it at the end after the longest cool-down you can arrange. It is not a true cold start, but a fault that shows after an hour standing is a fault worth knowing about.
  • Make the cold start a condition of the deal. Agreed subject to seeing it started cold, either at the seller’s or at an independent workshop on the morning of the inspection.

And treat the warm bonnet as one data point rather than a verdict. It sits alongside the rest of the picture: the service history, the tyres, the recorded mileage, the title record. What owner complaint records suggest, and what they do not

People want a number here: how many miles before a starting system gives trouble. We do not have that number, nobody does, and the data we hold cannot be made to produce it. Here is what it can do.

Our archived pull of NHTSA owner complaints contains 1,324 records in which the owner stated a mileage, drawn from 9,096 complaints scanned, spread across thirteen models and fifteen component categories.

Read this before reading any figure below. These mileages are the odometer readings at which owners filed a safety complaint with a federal regulator. They are not average failure points and they are not service intervals. A median of 49,000 in the electrical system category means half of the electrical complaints in this file were filed below that reading — that is, the point at which problems in that category became serious enough to report. The file is also right-censored, dominated by cars that have only been observed to the present day, so its upper tail describes how long these vehicles have been on the road rather than how long they last. The ordering of the categories is the part worth reasoning from.

With that said: electrical system complaints, 145 of them, carry a median of 49,000. Engine complaints, the largest category in the file at 200 reports, sit at 58,000. Gasoline fuel system complaints, 134 of them, sit considerably later at 89,000.

The modest and defensible reading is that electrical problems reach the reporting threshold earlier in this file than fuel system problems do. For a buyer that supports something you probably suspected: on a car of ordinary age, the boring electrical causes — battery, connections, earths, switches, sensors — deserve to be checked before the expensive ones are assumed. It is not a prediction about your car. It is a reason to work in the order this page suggests rather than starting with the fuel pump.

If it will not start right now

A working order for the driveway, assuming you are not trying to fix it yourself so much as work out who to call and what to tell them.

  • Note exactly what it does before you try anything else, because the first attempt is the most informative one and a jump start destroys the evidence.
  • Check the obvious interlocks. Automatic in park, or try neutral. Manual with the clutch fully down. Steering lock released — a wheel loaded against the lock will stop the key turning and reads as a dead car.
  • Look at the security telltale. If it is flashing, try the other key before anything else.
  • Look at the battery terminals. Loose, furry or green means clean and tighten before diagnosing anything further.
  • Listen for the fuel pump prime with the ignition on and the radio off.
  • If you jump it and it runs, do not switch it off until you know whether it is charging. Drive it straight somewhere the charging system can be tested.
  • Do not keep cranking. Prolonged cranking overheats the starter, flattens what charge remains, and on a fuel-related no-start can fill a catalyst with unburnt petrol.

It will not start and you bought it last week

Two things worth knowing before you assume this is now entirely your problem.

The first is that an open safety recall is remedied free of charge by a franchised dealer regardless of who owns the car, how it was sold, or whether any warranty box was ticked. The second is that what the seller owes you was decided at the point of sale rather than now. If you bought from a dealer, the window form on the car recorded whether it was sold with a dealer warranty or with none, and that form forms part of your contract. If you bought privately, the answer is almost always that you own the problem outright. Either way, the document to look at is the one you already have.

Then work the fault the same way as everyone else: identify which of the four behaviours the car is showing, eliminate the supply side before the fuel side, and get the codes read before parts are bought. A no-start on a recently purchased car feels like a catastrophe. It is usually a battery, a connection or a sensor, and it is almost never the thing you fear at the moment it happens.

Common questions

Why won’t my car start but the lights work?

Dashboard and interior lights draw very little current, so they will happily run on a battery with nothing like enough capacity to turn a starter. Watch what the lights do during the attempt rather than before it: if they dim heavily or go out, the battery or its connections are the problem. If they stay bright while nothing happens, the fault is more likely to be in the starter circuit, the solenoid, or an interlock such as the neutral safety switch.

What does it mean if my car clicks but won’t start?

Rapid clicking is the starter solenoid pulling in and dropping out repeatedly because there is not enough current to hold it — almost always the battery, a corroded terminal or a failed earth. A single solid click followed by silence means the solenoid engaged and the motor did not turn, which points at the heavy-current circuit, the starter itself, or an engine that will not rotate. Why does my car crank but not start?

Can a key stop a car from starting?

Yes, and it is commonly missed because the engine cranks perfectly. A security or padlock symbol that stays lit or flashes during cranking is the car telling you exactly this. Try the second key before pursuing anything more expensive.

Should I ask the seller not to warm the car up before I arrive?

Yes, and put it in writing when you arrange the viewing. Cold starting reveals slow cranking, extended cranking, blue smoke on the first firing, cold knocks and rattles, and a rough idle that settles — all of which are invisible on a warm engine. It is the single most diagnostic event available during a viewing and it lasts about fifteen seconds.

What if the car is already running when I get there?

Say so, calmly, and ask to come back and start it yourself. There are innocent explanations and a reasonable seller gives one immediately. If a second viewing is not possible, leave the car standing for as long as you are there, do everything else first, and restart it at the end after the longest cool-down you can manage. Treat resistance to any of that as information rather than as an inconvenience.

Is a car that is hard to start worth buying?

Only with a diagnosis in hand, and never on the seller’s estimate. Hard starting spans everything from a battery at the end of its life to fuel pressure bleeding down overnight to a heat-sensitive crank sensor, and the range of outcomes is far too wide to price from the symptom. Have it scanned for stored and pending codes across every module, get an independent opinion in writing, and make that the basis of the conversation about price rather than a guess you make standing in the road.
