Arctic Cat VIN Decoder: One Code, and One Model to Match
One code and one model is the entire federal entry, so almost everything a buyer wants comes from somewhere else.

The short version

A vehicle identification number is built to a federal layout that does not change with the badge. The first three characters are the world manufacturer identifier, assigned to the legal entity that issues numbers. Characters four to eight are a descriptor block the manufacturer designs for its own use. Position nine is a check digit computed arithmetically from the other sixteen. Position ten carries the model year. Position eleven identifies the plant. The last six are the serial.

There is one thing a genuinely make-specific decoder would add, and it is worth naming so that its absence is not mistaken for an oversight. Positions four to eight are the manufacturer’s own scheme, and the federal register does not publish the key to it. The register records who holds a prefix, which vehicle class the prefix is filed under, which country the registrant filed in, and when the code was opened. It does not record that a given character in position six means one engine on one machine and something else on another.
So this page prints no position-by-position table for the make and no plant-code list, because we hold neither from a source we would defend. Decoding a real number returns the descriptor fields as the federal system resolves them for that specific vehicle, which is a different and more reliable thing than a printed key.
One code, and that is the whole entry
Under Arctic Cat the register holds one world manufacturer identifier: 4UF, filed under the company name ARCTIC CAT INC, recorded against UNITED STATES (USA), classified as an Off-Road Vehicle, and opened on 16 October 2019. There is no second code, no second company name, no second country and no second vehicle class. The whole entry fits in a sentence.
That has one immediate and useful consequence for anyone reading a decode. On a make with several codes, the first three characters carry information: they can separate one registrant from another, or one country of registration from another, and a reader has to work out which. Here they cannot. Every number covered by this entry opens with the same three characters, so those characters confirm the entry and tell you nothing that distinguishes one machine from the next.
The reverse case is worth stating just as plainly. If a number in front of you opens with three characters other than 4UF, this entry does not describe it. That is not automatically a problem — it is a fact about which register row the number resolves against, and the honest response is to read what the decode of that specific number actually returns rather than to assume it should have matched this page. A number is decoded on its own terms, not against a page written about a badge.
The single company name is worth a note too. ARCTIC CAT INC is the registrant as filed, character for character, and that is all the field claims. It is telling you which entity holds the right to issue numbers under that prefix. It is not telling you who designed the machine, who sells it, who warrants it, or whose name is over the dealership door. On a make with several filed names those two things visibly come apart. What that field is reporting is worth being precise about, because it is easy to over-read. Those three words are the federal classification recorded against the code. They are a category the registrant filed under, not a description of a machine, not a body style, not a seat count, and not a statement about where anything may lawfully be ridden. A decode returning Off-Road Vehicle is telling you how the code was classified. It is not adjudicating what the machine in the seller’s garage is.
It follows that the class field cannot cross-check the advert for you here. On a make where the codes split across passenger cars, trucks and multipurpose vehicles, a mismatch between the class and the advert is at least a question worth asking. On an entry with one class and one code, there is no mismatch available. The field agrees with itself and moves on.
Where a class distinction genuinely matters to a buyer, it usually matters through the paperwork rather than through the decode — which of the checks below return anything at all, and what a state expects to see at the point of registration. One model name, and the name is the badge
The decoder holds one model for this make, and the model name is “Arctic Cat”. That is not a summary or a placeholder we have substituted for a longer list; it is the single entry in the roster, spelled as the register spells it.
This is the part of the entry with the sharpest practical consequence, so it is worth slowing down on. On most makes, the model field is the field a used buyer leans on hardest. It is the one that either agrees with the advert or does not, and a disagreement between the model a number decodes to and the model in the listing is the cheapest way there is to end a conversation before anyone has driven anywhere. That check works because the roster holds many names, and only one of them comes back.
Here the roster holds one name, and it is the make name. A decode that returns the model as “Arctic Cat” has confirmed that the number resolves against this entry. It has not confirmed which machine you are looking at, because there is no second name it could have returned instead. The field is doing its job and its job is small.
So the verification a buyer would ordinarily get free, from the model field, has to be bought elsewhere on this make. That does not mean going without it. It means getting it from the number itself as read off the machine, from the seller’s own documentation, from the per-number retrievals further down this page, and from a physical look at the machine. The register records 16 October 2019 against 4UF. That is the date the code was registered. It is not the date any machine was built, not a model year, not a date of first sale and not a date of first titling.
The distinction matters more than it sounds, because a single date on a single code invites exactly the wrong inference. A registration date ranks a filing. It does not tell you when numbers began to be issued under the code, how many were issued, or whether any were. Across the whole pull behind this site, registration dates run from March 2015 to July 2026, which is a fact about when the codes in this data file were opened and not a statement about vehicle age anywhere.
The model year of a specific machine lives at position ten of its own number, and that is where to read it. Our model-year chart converts the character to a year. This is one of the places where a thin register entry costs you nothing at all. The model-year character is carried by the number, not by the register row, so it works exactly as well on a make with one code as on the largest entry in the register.
One country, and what the country field records
The register records UNITED STATES (USA) against the code. One country, because there is one code.
What that field records is where the registrant filed. It is not an assembly location, and this page will not present it as one. The distinction is easy to lose because the two often coincide and the word invites the assumption, but the register is describing a filing, not a factory. On makes with codes across several countries the field separates the entry into groups; here it groups everything into one, and adds nothing that distinguishes one number from another.
Position eleven of an individual number is the plant character, and it is the field that would answer a where-was-this-built question if anything published resolved it. Nothing else answers to the name, and there is no parent
The register’s name endpoint matches company names as text rather than resolving brands, so a query for a common word can drag in unrelated builders whose registered names happen to contain the same string.Counting those name matches in, or filtering them out, changes the total.
Querying for this make returns zero unrelated matches. Nothing needs filtering out. Zero is also the ordinary result rather than a distinction — thirty-six of the forty-six entries read for this site return zero — so it is worth one sentence and no more.
The make also registers under its own name rather than sitting beneath a parent group in the register. Several well-known badges hold no code at all in their own right, and their numbers are issued under a parent’s filing, which is why a search on those badges returns almost nothing useful and why their pages on this site chart a parent entry instead. That is not the case here. The badge and the register entry line up, and the one code below the badge is the whole set.
Put those two facts together and the entry can be read at face value. There is nothing to subtract and nothing filed elsewhere. There is simply not very much of it.
What a thin entry actually costs you
It is worth being concrete about which questions the decode still answers and which it hands back, because the answer is not “none” and it is not “all of them”.
The decode still confirms that a number is well formed, that its check digit computes, that its prefix resolves to a registered entity, and what model year its tenth character carries. Those are per-number facts and none of them depends on how rich the register entry is. They are worth having and they cost nothing.
What the thin entry takes away is the corroboration a longer entry provides for free. There is no second code to compare against, no second registrant name to be surprised by, no second country to reconcile with the advert, no vehicle class that could contradict the listing, and no model name specific enough to check the seller’s description against. Every one of those is a cross-check that other make pages on this site can lean on, and on this entry none of them is available.
The practical translation is that the decode moves from being a verification step to being a formality. It tells you the number is real and properly shaped. It does not tell you the machine is what it is described as. On a make with a long roster those two conclusions arrive together, and it is easy to stop reading after the first. Here they do not arrive together, and the second one has to be earned.
None of that is a reason to skip the decode. It is a reason to know what you have after running it, and to budget the rest of the checking accordingly rather than treating a clean decode as the end of the enquiry.
What the decode does not carry, on this make or any other
Some of the gap is specific to a one-line entry. Most of it is not, and it would be there on the richest entry in the register.
Service history. Nothing about oil changes, belt or chain wear, coolant, filters or the last time anything was looked at reaches the register, and none of it is encoded in the number. Where a machine has been maintained privately there may be no central record anywhere — only a folder of receipts, which is worth asking for and worth reading properly when it appears.
Whether a recall was actually carried out. The federal recall lookup will tell you whether a campaign is recorded as open or remedied against a specific number, which is genuinely useful and free. What it does not do is confirm that anyone ever presented the machine. A campaign showing as remedied means a remedy was recorded; a campaign showing as open means the work is outstanding as far as the system knows. Condition, use and wear. A decode reads a build identity. There is no field in a VIN for hours run, for how hard anything was worked, for a bent component straightened at home, or for a repair paid for privately. Damage enters a record only where an insurer or a state filed something, and plenty never does. What was changed after it left the factory. A build record, where one is recoverable at all, describes an original configuration. It does not show a part swapped, an accessory bolted on, a component removed or a wheel and tyre package replaced. Original specification and present specification are two separate claims, and only the first has any chance of living in a record. Where the answers have to come from instead
Given all of that, the useful question is not what the decode says but what to run beside it, in what order, and what each thing is actually capable of returning.
Two free per-number retrievals do real work and neither is affected by the thinness of the register entry, because both are keyed to the individual number rather than to the make. What a title check returns depends on whether a titling record was ever created for the machine at all, which is a question about paperwork rather than about the number. Know the limits of the free tools before leaning on them. And the last source is the one no database replaces: the machine, in front of you, with the number read off it and the seller answering questions about the folder. Reading the number off the machine
Whatever the listing says, the number to work from is the one on the machine. Read it yourself rather than copying it from an advert, and read it from more than one place if the machine offers more than one.
Look for a stamped or plated number on the frame and for any manufacturer label carrying the same characters. Two readings that agree are worth having. Two that disagree is a finding in itself rather than a transcription problem to be shrugged off, and so is a label that looks newer than the metal around it, or fixings that have obviously been disturbed. Where the number runs to seventeen characters, run the check digit before doing anything else. Position nine is computed from the other sixteen, so a mistyped number usually fails arithmetically before it has cost anybody a journey. Then compare, character by character, the number on the machine against the number on the paperwork and the number you decoded. On an entry this thin that comparison is doing a larger share of the work than it would on any other make page here, because it is one of the few checks that does not depend on the register having much to say.
A sequence for buying one used
Put together, the order looks like this, and the first few steps cost nothing.
Get the full number from the seller and validate the check digit where the number is seventeen characters. A number that fails is a transcription error until proved otherwise, and finding that out early is free.
Decode it. Expect the manufacturer prefix to resolve to ARCTIC CAT INC, the class to come back as Off-Road Vehicle and the model to come back as the make name, because that is what the entry holds. Read the model year off position ten against the year chart and check it against the advert, since that is the one field in the decode with real discriminating power on this make.
Run the free per-number lookups. Recalls and the theft flag are fast, free and capable of settling the matter from the kitchen table.
Then find out whether a titling record exists at all, and read the ATV guide linked above before you assume one does. Selling one
The same facts run the other way are worth money to a seller and cost nothing to use.
Publish the number in the listing and photograph the stamped or plated characters clearly enough to read. A seller who prints the number is telling every serious buyer that the record will survive being checked.
Then supply what the decode cannot. Because the register holds one model name for this make, a buyer decoding your number learns almost nothing about which machine it is, and the gap will be filled either by you or by the buyer’s suspicion. State the model year, produce whatever documentation exists, hand over the receipts folder, and run the recall lookup yourself so that the answer is in your hands before it is in theirs.
