Federally identified under a class word that does not fit, absent from the recall database, and sold under a brand name the register has never heard of.

The short version

  • Snowmobiles carry 17-character VINs and the federal decoder will read one. What it will not do is call it a snowmobile. vPIC recognises nine vehicle types — Passenger Car, Truck, Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle (MPV), Motorcycle, Bus, Trailer, Low Speed Vehicle (LSV), Off-Road Vehicle and Incomplete Vehicle — and none of them is a tracked machine.
  • Asking the register for Ski-Doo returns nothing at all. No manufacturer is registered under that name, and there is no make called Ski-Doo in vPIC’s make list either. The codes sit under Bombardier Recreational Products, and a decode of one of them comes back badged Can-Am.
  • The four names that do return something — Arctic Cat, Polaris, Yamaha and Bombardier Recreational Products — hold 25 three-character codes between them. 17 are filed as Motorcycle, 5 as Off-Road Vehicle, 2 as Low Speed Vehicle and 1 as Trailer. None is filed as anything to do with snow, because no such filing exists.
  • Arctic Cat holds exactly one code, 4UF, opened on 16 October 2019 and last updated on 29 March 2022. The decoder holds exactly one model name for the make, and that name is “Arctic Cat”.
  • The model lists are where the sleds actually appear. Polaris has 153 models on the register and Yamaha 271, and both lists are full of snowmobile lines — Indy, RMK, SwitchBack, Rush and Matryx on one; Sidewinder, SRViper, Phazer, Apex and VK540 on the other. The machines are in the data. The class word is not.
  • vPIC publishes 144 variables. Eight were built for motorcycles, four for trailers, four for buses and two for trucks. Nothing was built for a tracked machine: there is no ski field, no track field and no engine-hours field. The only variable with “track” in its name is Track Width (inches), which measures wheels.
  • The federal recall lookup does not carry these machines. Asked which makes it holds for the 2020 model year it returns 332 names and Arctic Cat is not among them. Under Polaris it lists three models, all Slingshot variants; under Yamaha, two motorcycles. A query for a Polaris Indy or a Yamaha Sidewinder comes back empty.
  • So a decode confirms who built the machine and which class of code it was issued under. Hours, condition, theft status and title have to come from somewhere the number does not reach.

People searching for a snowmobile VIN lookup are usually holding a number off a used sled and expecting it to behave the way a car’s number behaves: type it in, get back a make, a model, a year and a specification. Part of that expectation is met. Most of it is not, and the reasons are structural rather than technical.

This page works from the federal register itself — the manufacturer codes, the vehicle types, the model lists, the published variables and the recall database — asked directly about the five names a snowmobile buyer is most likely to be holding. Where a source returns nothing, that is reported as nothing. Several of the most useful findings on this page are absences.

The short characterisation, before the detail: the number identifies the machine well enough to catch a lie in an advert, and it is close to useless for everything else a snowmobile buyer actually needs to know. That is not a failure of any particular decoder. It is what happens when you hand a highway-vehicle database a machine that does not use highways.

The register recognises nine kinds of vehicle, and a sled is not one of them

NHTSA’s vPIC system publishes a fixed vocabulary of vehicle types, and it is short. There are nine: Passenger Car, Truck, Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle (MPV), Motorcycle, Bus, Trailer, Low Speed Vehicle (LSV), Off-Road Vehicle and Incomplete Vehicle. Every manufacturer code in the register is filed under one of those nine words, and every decode of a real number returns one of them in the Vehicle Type field.

There is no snowmobile in that list. There never has been. A snowmobile is not a motor vehicle for highway purposes, so it sits outside the classification the register was built to serve, and the register has no word for it.

That has a direct consequence for anyone reading a decode result. The class word that comes back for a sled will be one of the nine, and the one it lands on will be a word that does not describe the machine. Most commonly it is Motorcycle. Sometimes it is Off-Road Vehicle. On one make it can be Low Speed Vehicle. A buyer who reads “Motorcycle” on the screen and concludes the seller has given them the wrong number, or that the decode has failed, has misread a correct result.

Off-Road Vehicle at least exists as a category and is used in practice. For a snowmobile there is no category that was ever meant to fit, so the word you get is whichever one the manufacturer’s registration happened to be filed under, and that is a fact about paperwork rather than about the machine in the shed.

Not one of the 25 three-character codes behind these machines is filed as anything to do with snow, because the register recognises nine vehicle types and none of them is a tracked machine — 17 of the 25 are filed as Motorcycle, which is a registration class rather than a description. Ski-Doo is the sharpest column on the grid: it is a brand rather than a legal entity, the codes sit under Bombardier Recreational Products, and a decode of one comes back badged CAN-AM. What the five names actually return

We asked the register for world manufacturer identifiers under five names. Four of them returned codes. One returned nothing, and that absence is the most useful single fact on this page.

Arctic Cat returns one code and one code only: 4UF, registered to ARCTIC CAT INC, country recorded as the United States, filed as Off-Road Vehicle. It was created on 16 October 2019 and last updated on 29 March 2022. That is the entire register entry for the make.

Polaris returns 10 codes, every one of them under the single entity name POLARIS INDUSTRIES INC. Six are filed as Motorcycle: 5VP and 57X, both opened in June 2015; 4XA, opened on 12 February 2016; and 3NE, 3NS and TAP, all three opened on the same day, 19 March 2021. Two are filed as Low Speed Vehicle: 52C and 5AS, also from June 2015. Two are filed as Off-Road Vehicle: SN1, opened on 25 July 2022, and S21, opened on 24 January 2023.

Yamaha returns 10 genuine codes spread across three legal entities — YAMAHA MOTOR CORPORATION, YAMAHA MOTOR CO., LTD. and YAMAHA MOTOR TAIWAN CO., LTD. Nine of the 10 are filed as Motorcycle. One, JYE, is filed as Off-Road Vehicle and was opened on 25 July 2022, which is the same day Polaris opened SN1. Two makers, unconnected, filing their first off-road code on the same date is a coincidence worth noting and nothing more, but it does show how recent that category is in practice.

Bombardier Recreational Products returns four three-character codes: 2BV and 2BX filed as Motorcycle, 2BZ filed as Trailer, and 2BW filed as Off-Road Vehicle. 2BV and 2BW date from 9 June 2015; 2BW carries the most recent update of anything in this group, 13 October 2025. There is also a six-character code, 2B9124, filed as Trailer and created on 23 January 2017. Six-character codes are issued to low-volume registrants and are counted separately from three-character ones throughout this site.

Ski-Doo returns nothing. Count zero, no results, no error. We checked the obvious variants too — the hyphenated form, the run-together form and the spaced form — and all three return the same empty result.

Ski-Doo is not a name the register knows

It is worth being precise about what that absence does and does not mean, because the wrong reading of it would be alarming and wrong.

It does not mean the machines are unregistered, unidentified or somehow off the books. It means the world manufacturer identifier is issued to a legal entity and not to a marketing brand. Ski-Doo is a brand. The entity behind it registers under its own corporate name, and that name is Bombardier Recreational Products.

Nor is the brand hiding elsewhere in the system. vPIC keeps a separate register of make names, thousands of them, and there is no entry in it for Ski-Doo in any spelling. Arctic Cat is there. Polaris is there. Yamaha is there. BRP is there. Can-Am is there. Ski-Doo is not.

The practical consequence shows up the moment you decode. Hand the register the prefix 2BV and it returns the manufacturer as BOMBARDIER RECREATIONAL PRODUCTS INC and the make as CAN-AM. Hand it 2BW — the off-road code — and it returns CAN-AM again. A buyer decoding a BRP-built sled will therefore see a make name that belongs to the group’s wheeled products, on a machine that has never had a wheel on it. That is the register answering correctly and unhelpfully at the same time.

This pattern is not unique to snow machines, and our page on the Can-Am VIN decoder sets out the general case: a brand holding no code under its own name while the parent group holds several, filed under words that cut across the brand rather than along it. What is unusual here is the direction of the error. On most brands the parent’s name is at least unfamiliar, so a reader knows to look it up. Here the decode returns a confident, specific, recognisable and wrong badge.

One further finding from the same corner of the register. Asking for BRP rather than Bombardier returns two additional codes under different legal entities: 3JB, registered to BRP MEXICO, S.A. DE C.V. and created on 21 September 2018, and 3JC, registered to BRP QUERETARO, S.A. DE C.V. and created on 18 December 2024. Both record Mexico as the country and both are filed as Motorcycle. They do not change the picture — they add two more codes carrying a class word that has nothing to do with snow.

25 codes, and what every one of them is filed as

Put the four names that returned results together and the register holds 25 three-character codes across them: 1 for Arctic Cat, 10 for Polaris, 10 for Yamaha and 4 for Bombardier Recreational Products.

Sorted by the class word rather than by the maker, those 25 break down as 17 filed as Motorcycle, 5 as Off-Road Vehicle, 2 as Low Speed Vehicle and 1 as Trailer. That is the whole distribution. There is no residual category, no unclassified remainder and no snowmobile.

Read it that way and the pattern is plain. Two thirds of the codes behind the machines a snowmobile buyer is shopping for are filed under the word Motorcycle. That word is doing an enormous amount of work in this register: it covers road bikes, it covers quads on several makes, and it covers a very large share of the codes that snowmobiles are issued under. It is a registration class, not a description.

The Off-Road Vehicle codes are recent by comparison — Arctic Cat’s in 2019, the Polaris and Yamaha pair in 2022, the second Polaris one in 2023 — with the exception of BRP’s 2BW, which dates from 2015. Whether a given machine’s number was issued under an older Motorcycle code or a newer Off-Road one is a question about when and how the manufacturer filed, not about what the machine is.

There is a country dimension too, and it is patchier than a buyer might expect. Polaris records Mexico against 3NE and 3NS, Poland against TAP and the United States against SN1 and S21 — and records no country at all against the other five. Yamaha spreads across Japan, Taiwan and the United States, with two codes carrying no country. Bombardier Recreational Products records Canada against two codes and nothing against the other two. A blank country field is a gap in the filing rather than a statement that the machine was built nowhere, and it is a reminder that the first character of a VIN is a weaker geographic signal on these machines than the guides suggest.

One false match, and why the raw count misleads

The register’s manufacturer endpoint matches company names as text. Ask it for a word and it returns every registrant whose legal name happens to contain that word, related or not. On several makes this inflates the apparent code count badly.

Among the names on this page it happens once. Querying Yamaha returns 11 rows, but one of them is 1Z9782, registered to OLD SCHOOL YAMAHA TRAILERS, filed as Trailer and created on 29 July 2025. That is a small independent registrant with the word in its name, not a Yamaha filing, and it is why the genuine count for the make is 10 rather than 11.

Arctic Cat, Polaris and Bombardier Recreational Products return no false matches at all, so their raw counts and their real counts are the same. But the general lesson holds whatever make you are checking: a headline number pulled straight out of the endpoint has to be read row by row before it means anything, and the six-character codes in the results are a different class of registration from the three-character ones.

The model lists are where the snow finally appears

Here is the part that redeems the exercise. The class words are useless, but the model field is not, and on two of these makes it is genuinely rich.

The register holds 153 models for Polaris. Scroll that list and the sleds are unmistakable: Indy, RMK, SwitchBack, Rush, Matryx, Axys, Fusion, XCF, SKS, WideTrak, Boost, Classic, Touring and a long tail of displacement-prefixed entries. Alongside them sit the quads and the side-by-sides — Sportsman, RZR, Ranger, Scrambler, General — and the GEM low-speed vehicles. It is one undifferentiated list covering everything the company files, which is exactly what you would expect from a register that has one Polaris entity and no way to sort products by the surface a machine runs on. Note one thing that is missing from it: there is no Slingshot entry in the decoder’s model list for Polaris, even though the recall database further down this page holds three of them. Two federal systems, two different vocabularies for the same manufacturer.

Yamaha holds 271 models, and the snowmobile lines are there too: Sidewinder, SRViper, SRVenture, Phazer, Apex, RS Vector, FX Nytro, Bravo, Snoscoot, Transporter, VK540 and VK Professional among them. Two entries in that list are worth flagging because they are shaped unusually. One reads “Sidewinder/Snoscoot/SRViper/SRX” and another reads “Mountain Max/SXVenom/Transporter”. Those are single register entries carrying several model names at once, which means a decode landing on one of them will return a slash-separated string rather than a single model. That is the filing, not a fault.

Arctic Cat is the outlier and the warning. The register holds 1 model for the make, and the model is called “Arctic Cat”. No ZR, no Riot, no Bearcat, no Catalyst — one entry with the make’s own name in it. A decode of an Arctic Cat number cannot return a model line, because there is no model line in the data to return. So the honest position on the model field is that it is make-dependent to an extreme degree. On a Polaris or a Yamaha it can confirm the line, which is worth having. On an Arctic Cat it cannot. And on none of them does it confirm the trim, the engine option, the track length, the suspension package or the year’s running changes, because the register knows model lines and not build specifications. 144 fields, built for other machines

The other half of what a decoder can do is the variable list — the set of things vPIC is capable of returning about any vehicle at all. It publishes 144 variables, and reading them by group is instructive.

There is a group of eight variables built specifically for motorcycles: chassis type, suspension type, fuel-tank type and material, custom motorcycle type, combined braking system, wheelie mitigation and a free-text field. There is a group of four for trailers, covering connection type, body type, length and other information. There is a group of four for buses and a pair for trucks, covering bed type and cab type.

There is no group for off-road machines and none for tracked ones. Nothing in the 144 asks about a track, a ski, a slide rail, a clutch, a drive belt or a set of hours. We searched the published names for track, ski, snow and hours: the only hit is Track Width (inches), which is the distance between wheel centres on an axle and has nothing to do with a snowmobile’s track.

What an off-road decode leans on instead is a handful of general-purpose variables — Vehicle Type, Body Class, Engine Number of Cylinders, Displacement (CC) and Drive Type. Those are real and they are useful, and displacement in cubic centimetres is the field most likely to come back populated on a machine of this kind. But it is a borrowed set, not a purpose-built one, and it caps how much detail any decoder can produce regardless of which website you hand the number to.

This matters for a specific reason. A great deal of what gets sold as a “snowmobile VIN decoder” implies a per-make key for positions four to eight — the descriptor block where the manufacturer encodes engine, track and configuration. The federal register does not publish that key for any manufacturer. Tables of that sort circulate, mostly reverse-engineered from small samples and copied between sites, and this site does not print one, because we have no source for it we would be willing to defend.

The recall database does not have your snowmobile in it

This is the finding with the sharpest practical edge, and it is the one most likely to catch a buyer who has bought a car before.

The free federal recall lookup is the single most valuable thing a used-car buyer does with a VIN. It is authoritative, it is per-vehicle and it costs nothing. On a snowmobile it returns nothing, and not because the machine is clean.

Asked which makes it holds for the 2020 model year, the recall database returns 332 names. Arctic Cat is not one of them, and neither is Ski-Doo or BRP. Polaris is in the list, but ask it for Polaris models and it returns three: Slingshot, Slingshot SL and Slingshot R — a road-going three-wheeler, not a sled. Yamaha is in the list, and it returns two models, the XV1900 and the YZF-R1, both motorcycles. Can-Am is in the list with four: Spyder F3, Spyder RT, Ryker and Commander.

Query the database directly for a Polaris Indy or a Yamaha Sidewinder and the answer is an empty result, cleanly returned. The complaints side behaves the same way: the complaint database lists 141 makes for that model year, and under Polaris the models are again the three Slingshot variants and nothing else.

The correct reading of all that is not “no recalls have been issued”. It is “this database does not cover these machines”. Snowmobiles are not motor vehicles for highway safety purposes, which is the same reason there is no vehicle type for them, and the highway agency’s campaign register is therefore the wrong place to look. A clean result from it is not evidence of anything.

For a buyer that changes the checklist rather than shortening it. A recall or safety-campaign check on a sled has to go to the manufacturer — the maker’s own campaign lookup and its dealer network, both of which are keyed to the same VIN you are holding — rather than to the federal tool. Assuming the federal tool covers it, and taking its silence as a pass, is the specific mistake this section exists to prevent.

How thin this is against the rest of the register

Some context on how unusual these entries are. Across the 57 makes this site has read for its by-make index, the register holds 539 three-character codes. Sorted by the class word they are filed under: 131 Passenger Car, 118 Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle, 94 Truck, 79 Incomplete Vehicle, 69 Motorcycle, 23 Trailer, 19 Bus, 4 Off-Road Vehicle and 2 Low Speed Vehicle.

Four. Out of 539. The entire Off-Road Vehicle category across every make on this site is one Yamaha code, two Polaris codes and one Arctic Cat code, and Low Speed Vehicle is two Polaris codes and nothing else. Bombardier Recreational Products’ codes are not in that 539 at all, because the group registers under its own name rather than under a brand we index — Can-Am’s entry records zero codes under its own name and four under the parent.

Set against 131 passenger-car codes and 118 for multipurpose vehicles, the off-road corner of the register is a rounding error. That is not a criticism of the register; it is a description of what the register is for. But it does explain why a snowmobile decode feels thin compared with a car decode. The system was built around the vehicle classes that dominate it, and this is not one of them.

Reading the number off the machine

Whatever a listing says, work from the number on the machine rather than the number in the advert, and read it yourself.

We are not going to print a per-make table of plate locations for snowmobiles, for the same reason we do not print descriptor keys: the register does not record where a plate is fitted, and we have no source for a location list we would stand behind. What we will say is that the plate on a machine of this kind is small, exposed to salt and grit, and easier to damage or lose than a car’s. Find it, photograph it rather than transcribing it, and read the photograph rather than your handwriting.

Then check it against every piece of paper the seller has — registration, bill of sale, certificate of origin, insurance document, service records. Numbers that disagree with each other are a finding, not a typing error to be waved off. A plate that looks newer than the metal around it, or has been drilled off and refitted, or has fresh paint over its edges, is a serious finding rather than cosmetic wear.

Position nine of a 17-character number is a check digit computed from the other sixteen, so a mistyped number will usually fail arithmetically before it costs anybody a journey. It is worth running on any number that arrived by text message or was read off a screenshot. Note the limit, though: a check digit proves only that the characters are internally consistent. It says nothing about whether the machine exists, whether the number belongs to it, or whether a number has been copied from another machine entirely.

Position ten carries the model year, drawn from a fixed 30-character alphabet that repeats on a 30-year cycle. On a car that ambiguity is usually easy to resolve. On a sled that has been off the road, out of registration and in a shed for a decade, be careful: read the character against a plausible range for the machine rather than assuming the most recent cycle.

What to do instead, in order

The decode is the cheap part and it does one job well: it confirms who built the machine and, on the makes where the model list is populated, roughly what it is. Everything that decides whether the purchase is a good one sits outside the number.

Establish the theft position before money moves. This is the highest-value check on a machine of this class. Sleds are light, frequently stored in outbuildings rather than locked garages, often not registered anywhere, and recovered rarely. A seller who cannot produce documentation, or who wants to meet somewhere other than where the machine is kept, is asking a question rather than offering a convenience. Find out what your own state requires. Registration and titling for snowmobiles are state matters and the rules differ substantially — some states title them, some register them for trail use without titling, some do neither and ownership rests on a bill of sale and the manufacturer’s certificate of origin. What matters is the requirement where you will register the machine, not where it is being sold. A seller saying no title is needed may be completely right about their own state and completely irrelevant to yours. Get a bill of sale carrying the VIN, both parties’ details and the date, whatever the local practice.

Run the manufacturer’s campaign check, not the federal one. Covered above, and worth repeating because the federal tool returns a clean-looking empty result rather than an error.

Then do the part no database covers. On a sled that is most of the purchase. Hours matter more than miles and are frequently not displayed at all. Belt and clutch condition, slide-rail wear, track condition and the tell-tale damage from running on thin snow, a bent or repaired chassis, evidence of submersion, and a service history for a two-stroke that lives on a mixture it may or may not have been given — none of that is in any record, federal or commercial, and all of it decides the price. Look at the machine, run it, and get somebody who works on them to look at it if you are not that person.

Selling one

The same information runs in the other direction and is worth money to a seller.

Publish the number in the listing. A seller who prints the VIN is signalling that the machine will survive being checked, and the buyers who bother to check are the buyers who pay properly. Photograph the plate clearly enough to read.

Get ahead of the decode’s quirks rather than being caught by them. If your machine decodes as Motorcycle, say so in the listing and say why, because a buyer who discovers it themselves halfway through a conversation will treat it as a discrepancy. If it is a BRP machine that decodes as Can-Am, say that too. Both are correct register behaviour and both look wrong to somebody meeting them for the first time.

Then supply what the number cannot. Hours, with a photograph of the display if there is one. The service history, itemised. What was replaced and when — belt, slides, carbides, plugs. Any campaign work carried out, with the dealer’s paperwork. Every one of those is a document a buyer cannot obtain from any lookup at any price, which is exactly why having them makes the machine easier to sell than the identical one down the road without them.

Common questions

Can I look up a snowmobile by VIN?

Partly. A snowmobile carries a 17-character VIN and the federal vPIC decoder will read the manufacturer prefix, so you can confirm who built it. What you will not get is a class word that says snowmobile, because the register recognises nine vehicle types and none of them covers a tracked machine. Expect Motorcycle or Off-Road Vehicle in that field.

Why does my snowmobile VIN decode as a motorcycle?

Because that is the class the manufacturer’s code was filed under, and there is no better option available in the register. Of the 25 three-character codes held by Arctic Cat, Polaris, Yamaha and Bombardier Recreational Products, 17 are filed as Motorcycle. It is a registration class rather than a description of the machine, and it is not a sign that the number is wrong.

Is there a Ski-Doo VIN decoder?

Not a separate one, and the name itself returns nothing from the federal register. No manufacturer is registered under Ski-Doo and vPIC’s make list has no entry for it. The codes sit under Bombardier Recreational Products, and a decode of one comes back with the make shown as CAN-AM.

What is Arctic Cat’s manufacturer code?

4UF, and that is the only one. It is registered to ARCTIC CAT INC with the United States as the country, filed as Off-Road Vehicle, created on 16 October 2019 and last updated on 29 March 2022. The decoder also holds exactly one model name for the make, and that name is “Arctic Cat”.

Does the VIN tell me the engine hours?

No. There is no engine-hours field anywhere in the 144 variables vPIC publishes, for any vehicle type. Hours are a measured property of a specific machine at a specific moment, they matter more on a sled than mileage does, and they have to come from the display, the service record or an inspection.

Can I check a snowmobile for recalls with the federal tool?

Not usefully. The federal recall database returns 332 makes for the 2020 model year and Arctic Cat is not among them; under Polaris it lists only Slingshot variants and under Yamaha only motorcycles. A query for a Polaris Indy or a Yamaha Sidewinder comes back empty. Take that as the database not covering these machines rather than as a clean result, and check with the manufacturer and a dealer instead.

Will a decode tell me the model?

It depends entirely on the make. Polaris has 153 models on the register and Yamaha 271, and both lists include the snowmobile lines, so a decode can land on a real one. Arctic Cat has a single model entry named after the make itself, so on that make there is no model line to return. In no case does the register know the trim, the track length or the engine option.

Do snowmobiles need a title?

That is a state question with different answers in different states, and the rule that binds you is the one where you will register the machine rather than the one where it is being sold. Some states title them, some register them without titling, and some rely on a bill of sale and the certificate of origin. Get a bill of sale with the VIN on it regardless.

Where is the VIN on a snowmobile?

It varies by manufacturer and model year, and we are not going to print a location table we cannot source — the federal register records who owns a prefix, not where a plate is fitted. Find it on the machine, photograph it rather than copying it out, and check it against every document the seller has. Numbers that disagree with each other are a finding, not a typo.

Is a clean federal check enough to buy on?

No, and on this class of machine it is further from enough than usual. The decode confirms the builder and sometimes the model line. It carries nothing about hours, belt and slide wear, track condition, chassis repairs or submersion, and the federal recall and complaint databases do not cover these machines at all.
