Peterbilt VIN Decoder: Half the Codes Leave the Factory Unfinished
A chassis code tells you nothing about the body bolted to it, and the body builder fits a second plate of its own.

The short version
- There is no Peterbilt-only decoder and there is no need for one. Every vehicle certified for this market carries the same seventeen-character number, and one federal register resolves the manufacturer prefix on all of them.
- The register holds six manufacturer codes for the make, and all six are filed under a single company name: PETERBILT MOTORS COMPANY. No parent group sits above them in the register.

- The six codes form a tidy grid: a Truck code and an Incomplete Vehicle code in each of the three countries the register records — the United States, Canada and Mexico. That country field describes where the registering entity filed, not where any truck was assembled.
- All six codes carry the same registration date, 14 April 2015. That is the date the code was entered in the register. It is not a build date, a sale date or a model year, and on this make the dates rank nothing at all.
- What no decode carries: service history, whether a recall was actually completed, and the condition of the vehicle or the body bolted to it.
Search for a Peterbilt VIN decoder and the results suggest a specialist tool exists somewhere — something that knows heavy trucks the way a generic box does not. It does not exist, and the reason is structural rather than commercial. The number stamped on a Class 8 tractor is built to the same federal standard as the number on a hatchback, and the register that turns the first three characters into a manufacturer is the same register for both.
What is genuinely worth reading is the register entry itself, because on this make it is unusually clean and it contains one feature that changes how a result should be read. This page works from the entry as it stood when we read it on 5 September 2026: six codes, one registered company name, two vehicle types, three countries, one registration date and forty-seven models. Nothing here is a manufacturer briefing or a recollection. It is a public filing, read carefully, with the limits marked where they fall.
The feature that matters is the vehicle type field. Half the codes in this entry are filed as Incomplete Vehicle, which is the federal term for a vehicle that leaves its maker unfinished. That single word decides what a decode of a working truck is actually telling you, and it is the reason the answer can look thin to somebody expecting a description of the vehicle parked in front of them.
One federal system reads every VIN, heavy trucks included
The vehicle identification number is a federal standard and its layout does not change with the badge or the weight class. Positions one to three are the world manufacturer identifier, assigned to the legal entity that builds the vehicle. Positions four to eight describe the vehicle in a scheme the manufacturer designs for its own use. Position nine is a check digit computed arithmetically from the other sixteen characters. Position ten carries the model year. Position eleven identifies the assembling plant. The final six characters are the serial.
Because that structure is identical across everything certified for sale here, a general decoder handles a heavy truck as readily as it handles a saloon, and the phrase “Peterbilt VIN decoder” describes a search habit rather than a distinct piece of software. Where a make-specific decoder would genuinely earn its keep is the middle block, and this is the point at which we have to be straight about a gap. Positions four to eight are the manufacturer’s own descriptor scheme, and the federal register does not publish the key to it. The register records who holds a prefix, what vehicle class the prefix covers, which country the holder is registered in and when the code was opened. It does not record that a particular character in position six means one cab configuration and something else on a day cab.
So this page prints no position-by-position table and no plant-code list, because we have neither from a source we would defend. Tables of that kind are published in several places, and some of them may well be right. None of them is the register, though, and nothing printed alongside them tells a reader which rows to trust. A decode of a real number returns the descriptor fields as the federal system resolves them for that specific vehicle — which is a different and far more dependable thing than a printed key.
Six codes, one company name, no parent above it
A VIN opens with three characters the manufacturer does not choose for itself. They are assigned centrally, published in full, and they identify the entity that filed for the right to issue numbers. Under this make the register holds six, and every one of the six is filed under the same name: PETERBILT MOTORS COMPANY.
That uniformity is worth pausing on, because it is not how most entries look. Of the thirty-six makes we have read for this site, only five that hold codes at all file every one of them under a single company name. Larger groups typically establish a separate legal entity in each country they build in, and each of those entities registers in its own right, which is how a familiar badge ends up sitting above half a dozen filed names that a buyer has never seen. Here the badge and the registrant match on all six rows.
The make also registers under its own name rather than sitting beneath a parent group in the register. Several well-known marques hold no code of their own at all, and their numbers are issued under a parent’s filing, which is why a register search on those badge names returns almost nothing useful and why buyers conclude their lookup has failed. That problem does not arise here. The entry has no parent, and what you see is what the company holds.
The practical consequence is that the manufacturer name in a decode result should be unremarkable on this make. If a result returns PETERBILT MOTORS COMPANY, the register has done exactly what it was asked to do. The name is answering a narrow question — which registered entity issued this number — and it is not telling you who sold the truck, who financed it, who fitted the body or whose name is on the workshop that last touched it.
Three of the six leave the factory unfinished
Now the field that does the work. The register files every code under a vehicle type, and this entry uses only two of them. Three codes are filed as Truck. Three are filed as Incomplete Vehicle. There is no third type anywhere in the code set.
An incomplete vehicle, in the federal scheme, is a vehicle that leaves its manufacturer still requiring further manufacturing operations before it becomes a completed vehicle. On a heavy truck that generally means the frame rails, the running gear, the driveline, the cab and its controls, and nothing at all behind the cab. The chassis is built, certified as far as it can be certified in that state, and sold on to somebody else to finish.
Eleven of the thirty-six makes we have read hold at least one code filed that way, so the classification itself is not rare. What is unusual is the proportion. On this entry the split is exactly even, three and three, and no make in our set carries a higher share of Incomplete Vehicle codes — Freightliner matches it at four of eight, and nothing exceeds it. Those two types are also the whole of this entry: no code here is filed as anything else, and Freightliner’s codes divide between the same two.
Read that against what a decode returns and the consequence is immediate. Three of the six prefixes announce, in the register itself, that the vehicle was not finished when it was assigned its number. That is not a defect, a warning or an irregularity in the paperwork. It is a description of how the vehicle was built and sold, and it sets the boundary of what any decode of that number can honestly cover.
The body builder fits its own plate
When a chassis leaves as an incomplete vehicle, the certification of the finished article does not happen at the chassis plant. It happens later, at the company that completes the vehicle, and the federal rules put that responsibility in writing.
The chassis manufacturer supplies a document with the incomplete vehicle setting out what it has and has not certified, the weight ratings the chassis was engineered to, and the conditions under which a final-stage manufacturer can rely on those statements. The company that builds and mounts the body then certifies the completed vehicle in its own name and attaches its own certification label. On a finished truck you will therefore often find two plates: the one the chassis maker fitted, and a second one from whoever completed it.
That second plate is the one carrying the ratings that apply to the vehicle as it now stands — gross vehicle weight rating, the axle ratings, the date the vehicle was completed and the statement of compliance. It is worth reading and photographing, because it is the only place on the vehicle where the completing manufacturer identifies itself, and because the weight ratings on it govern what the truck may legally carry. One point catches people out, and it is the useful one to hold onto. The completing manufacturer does not issue a new VIN. The number assigned by the chassis maker stays with the vehicle for life, which is why a fully built-out truck still decodes to the chassis maker’s filing years after the body was fitted. The number describes the thing it was stamped on, and the body arrived afterwards.
What this does to a decode of a motorhome or a box body
Anyone decoding a working commercial vehicle or a motorhome runs into the same surprise: the result describes a chassis, and the vehicle in the yard is plainly more than a chassis. Nothing has gone wrong. The decode is answering for the part of the vehicle that carried the number from the beginning.
So a decode of a number issued under one of the three Incomplete Vehicle codes can return a manufacturer, a country, a model year and a set of chassis attributes, and it will say nothing whatever about the box, the tank, the tipping gear, the refrigeration unit, the crane, the sleeper conversion or the coach. Those were built by a company the federal decode does not name, to specifications it does not record, on a date it does not carry.

For a buyer this reframes the inspection rather than reducing it. The chassis has a federal record you can pull and read. The body has no federal record at all, so its history, its build quality, its mounting to the frame and its condition are questions for documents the seller holds and for somebody who climbs underneath it. A complete grid: three countries, two types, six codes
Laid out as a table, this entry is the tidiest we have read. The Truck codes are 1XP in the United States, 2XP in Canada and 3WP in Mexico. The Incomplete Vehicle codes are 1NP in the United States, 2NP in Canada and 3BP in Mexico. Three countries, two types, one code in every cell and none left over.
The grid is complete in both directions: every country-and-type combination is present exactly once, none is duplicated and no cell is empty. It is also the one entry in our set whose recorded countries are exactly the United States, Canada and Mexico — no fourth country, and no absence where one of those three would be expected.
The leading character tracks the country cleanly across all six rows: 1 on both United States codes, 2 on both Canadian ones, 3 on both Mexican ones. What does not follow a tidy rule is the rest of the prefix. The United States and Canadian Truck codes share their second and third characters, XP, but the Mexican Truck code is WP. The United States and Canadian Incomplete Vehicle codes share NP, and the Mexican one is BP. Anybody predicting a prefix from a half-remembered pattern will get the Mexican pair wrong, which is a good argument for reading the number rather than reconstructing it.
Keep the standing caution attached to the country field. It records where the registering entity filed, not the building a particular truck was assembled in. It is a signal about geography and a weak one about anything finer, and the federal data holds nothing that would let anyone sharpen it. Position eleven of an individual number is the plant character, but the register does not publish the key that turns it into a plant name, so no plant table appears on this page. A decode returning a country you were not expecting is the filing showing through, not an error and not evidence about the truck.
Six codes, one date, and why that ranks nothing
Every code in this entry carries the same registration date: 14 April 2015. All six, one day.
That makes this entry unique in our set in a second way. Of the thirty-six makes we have read, this is the only one where every code shares a single registration date. Every other entry that holds codes at all spreads them across at least two dates, and most across many more — the widest spread in our set runs to twenty-five distinct dates.
What follows from that is mostly a warning against reading too much into it. On other makes, opening dates can at least be put in order, and the order tells you which filings came later than which. Here there is no order to read. Six codes, one date, and nothing in the register that would let anyone say which of the six was used first, most, or at all.
The general caution applies with extra force as a result. A registration date is the date a code was entered in the register. It is not the date a vehicle carrying that code was built, not the date one was sold, not the date one was first titled, and not a model year. Codes can be registered ahead of use and can sit unused for a period. The date is evidence about a filing and about nothing else, and if you want the model year of a specific truck it lives at position ten of that truck’s own number, read against our model-year chart.
Two rows that come back with the name and are not these codes
The register’s name endpoint matches company names as text rather than resolving brands. Ask it for a manufacturer name and it returns every registered entity whose filed name contains that string, which on common words drags in small builders, body shops and specialist converters that have nothing to do with the marque. It is one of the main reasons code counts disagree between websites: different sites filter the noise differently, or not at all.
Querying this name returns two such rows. Both are filed under PETERBILT OF CLEVELAND, INC. DBA EXPRESS TRUCK REPAIR, both are recorded against the United States, and both were registered on 28 November 2017. Their identifiers are 1E9298 and 1E9299 — six characters rather than three, which is the register’s form for manufacturers below the small-volume threshold, whose identifier continues into positions twelve to fourteen of the number rather than stopping at position three.
The vehicle types on those two rows are the giveaway. One is filed as Motorcycle and the other as Trailer. Neither of those types appears anywhere in the six codes this page is about, which are Truck and Incomplete Vehicle and nothing else. We are not going to characterise what that business is or how it relates to anything, because the register does not carry that and this site does not fill in blanks from memory. It gives a name, a country, a type and a date, and that is the whole of it.
The practical use is simple. If you run the register query yourself and get eight rows rather than six, you have the two text matches in your results. Read the names. The six that matter are filed under the manufacturer name and are three characters long; the other two are neither.
Forty-seven models, and why none is named here
The federal register holds forty-seven models for this make. That is the decoder’s vocabulary: the set of model names a decode can return when it resolves a specific number.
The archived read this page works from carries that count and not the roster, so no model list is printed. That is a smaller point than it sounds and a more important one than it looks. Every make page on this site works from one recorded read of the register, and the rule is that we publish what the read contains. Typing out a model list from memory would be indistinguishable, to a reader, from reporting the data — and filler of that kind is indistinguishable, to a reader, from reporting the data. The count is not the useful part in any case. What a buyer needs is the model returned for one specific vehicle, and that comes from decoding that vehicle’s number. A list would only ever describe what the register knows about the make in general.
And a model name is not a specification. On a heavy truck the gap between the two is enormous: engine, transmission, axle configuration, ratios, wheelbase, suspension, cab type, sleeper, fifth wheel, power take-off provision and every choice made by whoever completed the vehicle. The register knows the model line. What the federal decode does not carry
This is the section that does the most work, because the gap between what people expect a VIN to hold and what it actually holds is widest here, and wider still on a vehicle assembled in two stages.
The number is a build identity. It exists so that a regulator can tie a recall campaign to a batch of vehicles, an insurer can tie a policy to an object, and a state can tie a title to that same object. It was never designed to describe a vehicle’s condition today, and it has no field for any of the following.
Service history. Nothing about oil changes, filter intervals, brake work, clutch replacement, injector work, aftertreatment cleaning or the last time anybody looked at the driveline reaches the register, and none of it is encoded in the number. On a commercial vehicle maintained by an owner-operator or an independent workshop there may be no central record anywhere — only the operator’s own file, which is worth asking for and worth reading properly when it appears. Whether a recall was actually completed. This one is worth being careful about. The federal recall lookup tells you whether a campaign is recorded as open or remedied against a specific number, which is free and genuinely useful. What no decode does is confirm that an owner ever presented the vehicle. A campaign showing as remedied means a remedy was recorded; a campaign showing as open means the work is outstanding as far as the system knows. Anything about the body. On a number issued under one of the three Incomplete Vehicle codes this is the largest silence of all. The bodywork was built by a company the decode does not name, to a standard it does not record, and whether anyone has ever assessed its structure, its mounting to the frame or its corrosion is not a question the federal data touches. Condition, mileage accuracy and damage that never reached a record. A decode reads the build. Damage enters a file only where an insurer or a state filed something, and a repair paid for privately leaves no trace at all. Reading the number off the vehicle
Whatever the advert says, the number to work from is the one on the vehicle. Read it yourself rather than copying it from a listing, and read it from more than one place.
The certification label is a federal requirement rather than a manufacturer courtesy, which is what makes it a dependable reading, and on a completed commercial vehicle you may find more than one label because the chassis maker and the completing manufacturer both fit their own. Read both. Photograph both. The frame itself usually carries a stamped or plated number as well, and on a vehicle you suspect has been apart that is the reading worth working hardest for. Two readings that disagree is a finding in itself rather than a transcription problem to shrug off. So is a plate that looks newer than the surface around it, fixings that have clearly been disturbed, or a completing manufacturer’s label carrying a number that does not match the chassis. Before anything else, run the check digit. Position nine is computed from the other sixteen characters, so a mistyped number usually fails arithmetically before it has cost anybody a journey. The records that sit around the number
The decode is the cheap part and the fast part. The record is where used-vehicle money is won and lost, and the record is retrieved rather than decoded — it lives in title files, insurer reports and recall databases, keyed to the number rather than encoded inside it.
Three retrievals do most of the work, in this order. The federal recall lookup is free, per-vehicle and authoritative on open campaigns. Know the boundaries of the free tools before leaning on them. Where a vehicle carries a brand on its title, the brand is the purchase. What a branded title means ranks the brands by how much each should worry a buyer. A sequence for a used truck
Put together, the order looks like this, and none of the first four steps requires leaving home.
Get the full seventeen characters from the seller and validate the check digit. A number that fails is a transcription error until proved otherwise, and finding that out early costs nothing.
Decode it, and read the vehicle type in the result before anything else. If the prefix is one of the three filed as Incomplete Vehicle, you now know that everything you are about to read describes a chassis, and that the body is a separate enquiry with a separate manufacturer and no federal record behind it. If the prefix is one of the three filed as Truck, the decode is still describing the vehicle as it was certified rather than as it stands today.
Run the free lookups. Recalls and the theft flag are per-vehicle, free and fast, and either can settle the matter from a desk.
Buy the title history once and read the chain rather than the headline. Which states, in what order, with what readings and what brands. A short chain with long ownerships reads well. A vehicle that has crossed several states quickly is asking a question the seller should be able to answer without hesitating.
Then do the part no record covers. Read the number off the vehicle with your own eyes, from the chassis plate and from every certification label fitted to it, and compare it character by character with the number you decoded and the number on the title. Ask for the maintenance file and read it. Photograph the completing manufacturer’s plate and its weight ratings. And get somebody competent underneath it, because the condition of a specific truck — and of a body the federal data has never heard of — is the one thing this entire page has been telling you the number cannot carry.
Selling one
The same facts, run in the other direction, are worth money to a seller and cost nothing to use.
Publish the number. A seller who prints the VIN in the listing is telling every serious buyer that the record will survive being checked, and the buyers who care are the ones who pay properly. Photograph the chassis plate and the completing manufacturer’s label clearly enough to read.
Then supply what the decode cannot. If the vehicle was built in two stages, name the company that built the body, produce whatever documentation came with it, and state the weight ratings from the plate rather than from memory. A buyer who has read a page like this one already knows the federal record stops at the chassis, and a seller who fills that gap without being asked is a seller whose paperwork is worth trusting on everything else.
