The phrase “VIN decoder” suggests a tool built for one marque. No such thing exists. It does not. What is worth reading is what that register actually records under the name, because this entry has a feature that looks, at first glance, exactly like a lookup that has failed. The vehicle identification number is a federal standard and its layout does not vary by badge. Positions one to three are the world manufacturer identifier, assigned to the legal entity that builds the vehicle. Positions four to eight describe the vehicle in a scheme the manufacturer designs for itself. Position nine is a check digit computed arithmetically from the other sixteen characters. Position ten carries the model year. Position eleven identifies the assembling plant. The last six are the serial.

Where a brand-specific decoder would genuinely earn its keep is the middle block, and this is the point at which we have to be straight about a gap. Positions four to eight are the manufacturer’s own descriptor scheme, and the federal register does not publish the key to it. The register records who owns a prefix, what vehicle class the prefix covers, which country the entity is registered in and when the code was opened. It does not record that a particular letter in position five means one body style on a saloon and something else on a crossover.
So this page prints no position-by-position table and no plant-code list, because we hold neither from a source we would defend. A decode of a real number returns the descriptor fields as the federal system resolves them for that specific vehicle, which is a different and far more dependable thing than a printed key assembled from somewhere else.
The count under this badge is zero
A VIN opens with three characters the manufacturer does not choose. They are assigned centrally, published in full, and they identify the entity that filed for the right to issue numbers. Ask the register how many of them are held under INFINITI and the answer is none.
That is worth stating flatly, because it is so easily misread. Zero here does not mean the register has a gap, that a data pull failed, or that these cars carry numbers of some irregular kind. What to search instead depends on what you are actually after. That is not a judgement about anything. It is a fact about how many prefixes one registrant has filed for, and it has one narrow practical consequence worth carrying: the pool a decode of an INFINITI number can land in is short. Those words are federal categories rather than descriptions a salesperson would use, and reading them too literally is a reliable way to reach a wrong conclusion. Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle is a regulatory classification with consequences for which safety standards apply, and it covers a wide range of shapes. A decode returning it is telling you how the vehicle was certified. It is not telling you the body style, the number of doors or the seating layout. Truck, likewise, is a certification class and not a description of a load bed.
Incomplete Vehicle is the one most likely to unsettle a reader who meets it for the first time. It is the class used where a vehicle is certified before it is finished — a chassis and drivetrain that another party completes into whatever it ends up being. Four named countries is also a narrow spread by the standards of that group. The parent files behind Acura and Lincoln each reach a dozen countries; the ones behind Chevrolet, GMC and Lexus reach seven. Only Can-Am’s parent, with a single country, is narrower than this one. Whatever else the entry is, it is not scattered.
Then the caution that has to be attached every time this field is printed, because it is the easiest column in the register to read wrongly. The country recorded against a code describes where the registering entity filed. It does not describe where a vehicle was assembled. It is a filing address, not a factory address, and it is not evidence about the origin of any individual car. A decode that returns a country you were not expecting is the register showing through, not a discrepancy.
The four codes with no country recorded deserve the same restraint. A blank field is an absence in the data, not a finding about a vehicle. If you want the country question answered for a specific car rather than for a filing, the honest answer is that the federal data will not do it. Position eleven of an individual number is the plant character, and the register does not publish the key that turns it into a plant name, so no page can responsibly print one. Four registered names, and not one is the badge

What the codes look like, and why none of them is labelled

Two things are worth taking from that. The first is a pattern in the leading character: in the sampled rows, J sits on the Japanese filings, 1 and 5 on the United States ones, 3 on the Mexican filings and S on the United Kingdom one. That is the ordinary structure of the identifier, where the opening character belongs to the region a code was allocated in. It is a fact about allocation, not a claim about assembly, and the rows that carry no country are a reminder that the character is not a substitute for the field.
The second is more important. Not one of those rows carries the badge. The name column holds a registrant, and the class column holds a federal category; there is no column that says which marque a code issues numbers for. Every make page on this site works from one archived read of the register, and the rule is that we publish what that read contains. A model list recited from memory would be indistinguishable, to a reader, from reported data — and it would be exactly as reliable as the memory it came from. Where we hold the roster, we print it. Here we hold the count, so the count is what you get.
The count is not the useful part anyway. What a buyer wants is the model returned for one specific car, and that comes from decoding that car’s number rather than from any list. A list would only ever tell you what the register knows about the make in general; the decode tells you what it holds about the vehicle you are being asked to pay for.
And a model name, however it arrives, is not a trim. The register knows the model line. It does not know which engine option, which drive configuration, which wheel, which interior or which options package a particular car left the factory with, and those are the distinctions that move the price on a used car. What a registration date is, and what it is not
The register carries an opening date against each code, and on several of our make pages that field supports a short timeline of when a manufacturer set up to issue numbers. It cannot do that here, for a plain reason: the archived read behind this page carries no dates for the codes in the parent entry, and the make itself holds no codes to carry dates for. So no dates are printed. That is a limit of the pull rather than a claim about the register, and it seemed better to say so than to leave a reader wondering why a section is missing.
It is still worth knowing what the field means, because you will meet it elsewhere and it is easy to read as something it is not. An opening date records when a code was registered. It is not a build date, not a sale date, not a first-titling date and not a model year. Codes can be opened ahead of production and can sit unused, so a date in a register entry is evidence about a filing and about nothing else.

What the decode will not tell an INFINITI buyer

A campaign showing as remedied means a remedy was recorded; a campaign showing as open means the work is outstanding as far as the system knows. Condition. A decode reads the build, not the car. It does not know the state of the tyres, the clutch, the paint, the suspension bushes or the air conditioning, and it cannot see a repair that was paid for privately and never reached a file. Which options are fitted. A build record can describe how a car was configured when it was made, and how much of that is recoverable varies enormously by manufacturer. What no historical decode shows is a change made afterwards: an accessory added, a component swapped, a feature disabled, a wheel and tyre package replaced. Original specification and current specification are two different claims, and only the first has any chance of living in a record. Reading the number off the car
Whatever the listing says, the number to work from is the one on the vehicle. Read it yourself rather than copying it from an advert, and read it from more than one place.
The usual locations on a passenger vehicle are the plate visible through the base of the windscreen on the driver’s side and the certification label in the driver’s door aperture. That label is a federal requirement rather than a manufacturer courtesy, which is why it makes a dependable second reading — and it is also where the vehicle’s certification details are printed rather than inferred. Two readings that disagree is a finding in itself rather than a transcription problem to shrug off. So is a label that looks newer than the aperture around it, or fixings that have clearly been disturbed. Before anything else, run the check digit. Position nine is computed from the other sixteen characters, so a mistyped number usually fails arithmetically before it has cost anybody a journey. The decode is the cheap part and the fast part. The record is where used-car money is won and lost, and the record is retrieved rather than decoded — it lives in title files, insurer reports and recall databases, keyed to the number rather than encoded inside it.

Ask for the service folder and read it. And book a pre-purchase inspection, because the condition of a specific car is the one thing this entire page has been telling you the number cannot carry.
A seller can run the same list in the other direction and be better off for it. Publishing the number in the listing signals that the record will survive being checked, and a seller who can explain in one sentence why the decode returns a company name that is not the badge looks like somebody who has read their own paperwork — which is exactly the impression worth having when the negotiation starts.
