The first character of a VIN is widely described as a geography tell, and on many makes it earns that description. On this one it is close to a formality. All 3 codes begin with the letter S, and the register records the same country, the United Kingdom, against all 3.

So the first character here carries no information a reader can act on. It does not separate one plant from another, it does not separate one marque from the other, and it does not distinguish a car built for one market from a car built for another. Whoever tells you the leading character of a Land Rover number reveals something is describing a rule that happens to have nothing left to say on this particular entry.

There is a second caution attached to the country field, and it applies to every make on the register. The field records where a filing sits, not where a vehicle was assembled. A code registered to a company in one country can carry numbers issued to vehicles built elsewhere, and the register holds no relationship between a code and a production line. On this entry the point is easy to miss, because there is only one country recorded and nothing contradicts it. That does not upgrade the field into a factory record. The register files each code under a vehicle type, and this entry uses two of them. One code is filed as Passenger Car. Two are filed as Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle, the class that catches most of what the market calls an SUV or a crossover.

Read those words as classifications rather than as descriptions and they stop being confusing. Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle is a regulatory category with a definition attached to it, and every vehicle registered under one of those two codes inherits the word regardless of how different two of them are from each other. A large estate-shaped luxury vehicle and a smaller family one are the same single word to the register. It is not describing what is parked on your drive; it is recording how the code was filed.

The Passenger Car code is the one people ask about, because the other two are filed as Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle and a single dissenting entry looks like an anomaly. The register does not say why, and this page is not going to invent a reason. What the register does say is that all 3 codes are held by one company whose name carries both marques, and that the type field describes a filing rather than a vehicle. Those two facts together are enough to stop the anomaly being mysterious without pretending to explain it.

For a buyer the consequence is small but worth stating plainly. If a decode of your vehicle comes back with a body class you were not expecting, that is not evidence the seller has misdescribed it and it is not an error in the lookup. Body class disputes are settled by the vehicle in front of you and by the paperwork, never by a category word inherited from a manufacturer code.

Fifteen models, and what a model list is not

The register holds 15 models for the make: 110" WB, 88” WB, 90" WB, Defender, Discovery, Discovery Sport, Freelander, LR2, LR3, LR4, New Range Rover, Range Rover, Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Velar. They are printed here as the register spells them, punctuation and all.

That list is the decoder’s vocabulary. It is not a used-car catalogue, it is not a production history, and it is emphatically not a trim list. A model appears in vPIC because the manufacturer filed it, and a name being present says nothing about how many were built, which years they cover, or whether any are within reach of a private buyer today. Several of the names in that list will be familiar to anyone who has browsed the classifieds for an afternoon. Some will not, and that is a fact about filings rather than about the market.

The reverse trap is the one that costs money. The register knows the model line; it does not know which engine, which suspension specification, which drivetrain, which interior or which options package a particular vehicle left the line with. So the honest summary of the model field is this. It will confirm that a vehicle advertised as a Discovery decodes as a Discovery. It will not settle an argument about which Discovery, and the second question is the expensive one.

The part of the number the register does not publish

Where a genuinely brand-specific decoder would earn its keep is the middle block. Positions four to eight are the manufacturer’s own descriptor scheme, and the federal register does not publish the key to it. What the register records is who owns the prefix, what vehicle class the prefix was filed under, which country the entity registered in, and when the code was opened. It does not record that a particular letter in position five means one body style on one line and something else on another.

So this page will not print a position-by-position table for Land Rover, and it will not print a plant-code list or a marque-specific model-year chart either. Tables of that kind are published in several places. None of them is the register, and we do not hold one from a source we would defend. What replaces it is better anyway. Where an advert’s stated year and a title’s year disagree, the character in position ten is the filed fact and it settles the argument.

What the opening dates do and do not say

Two of the three codes were opened in March 2015. The third was opened in April 2016. That is the whole of the date evidence, and it supports less than people want it to.

An opening date is the date a code was registered. It is not the date a vehicle carrying it was built, sold or first titled, and it is not the date a factory opened. Codes are routinely opened ahead of production and can sit unused for a long time. A cluster of filings in the same month usually means an administrative event rather than an industrial one — several makes on this site show exactly the same pattern in the same period, which is a strong hint that the register itself was being populated rather than that three production lines started at once.

What that means in practice is that nobody can date a vehicle from its manufacturer code. A number issued under a code opened in 2015 says nothing about whether the vehicle is from that year or much later. The model year lives at position ten of the individual number and nowhere else, and the registration history of the vehicle lives in title records rather than in the code. Reading a filing date as a production milestone is one of the most common ways to get a VIN wrong while feeling thorough.

What the decode will not tell a Land Rover buyer

This is the section that matters most, because it sets out the distance between what people expect a VIN to carry and what it actually carries.

The number is a build identity. It exists so that a regulator can tie a recall to a batch, an insurer can tie a policy to a vehicle and a state can tie a title to an object. It was never designed to describe a vehicle’s condition today, and it has no field for any of the following.

Maintenance history. No decode of any VIN reaches it, on this make or on any other. Whether the servicing was done on schedule, done late, done by a specialist or done by whoever was cheapest that month is a fact about receipts and stamps, not about the number. Mechanical condition. The seventeen characters are fixed when a vehicle is built and do not change as it wears, so nothing in them describes the state of any component today. That is a limit of the standard rather than a limit of this make: no decode returns the condition of a part on any vehicle, and no history report does either. Condition is established on a ramp, by somebody looking at the vehicle.

Whether recalls were actually done. The number will get you a per-vehicle recall answer, which is genuinely valuable, but the answer describes campaigns rather than workmanship. A campaign shown as remedied means a remedy was recorded, not that a related fault cannot recur. Which options were fitted. A build record can sometimes describe how a vehicle was configured when it was made. It cannot describe what has been added, removed, deactivated or replaced since, and the gap widens with every year a vehicle stays on the road. Electrical fault history. Stored and cleared fault codes are a property of modules on the vehicle, readable by a diagnostic tool and erased by one. They are not in any register anywhere, and a vehicle whose memory was cleared the morning of a viewing looks identical to one that never had a fault. This is an inspection question and only an inspection question.

Reading the number off the vehicle

Whatever a listing says, the number to work from is the one on the vehicle. Read it yourself rather than copying it from an advert, and read it from more than one place.

The usual locations are the same here as on any other passenger vehicle: visible through the base of the windscreen on the driver’s side, and on the certification label in the driver’s door aperture. That label is a federal requirement rather than a manufacturer courtesy, which is why it is a dependable second reading. Before anything else, run the check digit. Position nine is computed from the other sixteen characters, so a mistyped number usually fails arithmetically before it costs anybody a journey. Two readings that disagree is a finding, not a transcription problem to shrug off. So is a label that looks newer than the aperture around it, or fixings that have been disturbed, or a plate that sits at a slightly different angle from the one you have seen on every other example of the same vehicle. The records that sit around the number

The decode is the cheap part and the fast part. The record is where used-car money is won and lost, and the record is retrieved rather than decoded — it lives in title files, insurer reports and recall databases, keyed to the number rather than encoded inside it.

Three retrievals do most of the work, and the free ones come first. The title history is the one that repays paying for. It carries the brands, the state-by-state chain of who titled the vehicle and when, and the odometer readings that entered the record at each titling event. Two of those deserve a note specific to vehicles of this kind. Water deserves its own mention here, because it is the damage class least likely to reach a record at all. A sequence for a used Land Rover

Get the full seventeen characters from the seller and validate the check digit. A number that fails is a transcription error until proved otherwise, and finding that out before making arrangements costs nothing.

Decode it. Confirm that the make, model and model year returned agree with the advert, and expect the registrant name to be a company rather than a badge. A disagreement between the decode and the listing ends the conversation early, which is the cheapest way for a conversation to end.

Pull the title history once and read the chain rather than the headline. Which states, in what order, with what readings and what brands. A short chain with long ownerships reads well. A vehicle that has crossed several states quickly is asking a question, and the seller should be able to answer it without hesitating.

Then do the part no record covers, which is the part that decides whether the vehicle is worth buying. Get the vehicle on a ramp. Have the mechanical condition assessed properly, the fault memory read before anybody clears it, and the underside inspected by somebody who has seen a few. Selling one

The same facts run in the other direction, and using them is close to free.

Publish the number. A seller who prints the VIN in the listing is telling every serious buyer that the record will survive being checked, and the buyers who care are the ones who pay properly. Photograph the windscreen plate and the door-aperture label clearly enough to read.

State the decoded model and model year rather than the badge on the tailgate, and describe the specification honestly, including anything added or changed after the build. A modification disclosed up front costs nothing; the same modification discovered during an inspection costs a negotiation.

Above all, lead with the maintenance file. It is the first thing a careful buyer asks for and the last thing most listings contain. Receipts, dates, who did the work and what was replaced are the single most persuasive documents you can produce, precisely because this entire page has been explaining that no decode and no history report can produce them for you.
