One register reads every VIN, this make included

The vehicle identification number is a federal standard, and its layout does not change with the badge. Positions one to three are the world manufacturer identifier, assigned to the legal entity that builds the vehicle. Positions four to eight describe the vehicle in a scheme each manufacturer designs for itself. Position nine is a check digit, computed arithmetically from the other sixteen characters. Position ten carries the model year. Position eleven identifies the assembling plant. The last six characters are the serial.

More than one company registers under this name, and one of them is the truck and bus business. That arrangement is ordinary in the way registers work and surprising in the way buyers read them. A manufacturer that issues numbers from more than one place generally establishes a separate legal entity in each, and each of those entities files in its own right. It says nothing about who owns what, how these six companies relate to one another, what is built where, or why any of the arrangements exist. For a buyer, the useful takeaway is short. A registrant name that does not match the badge is not, by itself, evidence of anything wrong. The checks that would genuinely expose a misrepresented vehicle are different checks: whether the number on the vehicle matches the number on the paperwork, whether the model and model year returned match the advert, and what the title record says. What “Incomplete Vehicle” means on four of the codes

Four of the twenty-two codes are filed under the class Incomplete Vehicle: JL6, JLS and JL7 under the truck and bus company, and JW6 under MITSUBISHI MOTORS CORPORATION (MMC). All four are recorded against Japan.

Incomplete Vehicle is a federal certification class rather than a description anyone would use in a showroom. It exists because not every vehicle leaves its first manufacturer finished. Some are certified and numbered as a rolling platform, then completed by a second company that fits the body, the cabin, the load area or the equipment the eventual operator needs. The register records the class the code was filed under. It does not record what any given vehicle was eventually turned into.

That distinction matters when a decode comes back thin. A number issued under an Incomplete Vehicle code can return a manufacturer, a class and a model year while telling you nothing recognisable about the vehicle sitting in front of you, because a great deal of what defines that vehicle was added after the number was assigned. What is worth knowing is that this make is one of them, because a buyer searching for a used passenger car has no reason to expect the class to appear under the badge at all.

Ten, five, three and four: how the codes split by class

The register files every code under a vehicle type, and the twenty-two split four ways. Ten are Passenger Car. Five are Truck. Three are Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle (MPV), the federal class that catches most of what the market calls an SUV or a crossover. Four are Incomplete Vehicle.

Two things follow from that spread. The first is that a registered entity is not tied to a single class. The second is a caution about reading the class field too literally. These are federal vehicle categories, not descriptions a salesperson would recognise. Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle (MPV) is a regulatory classification with consequences for which safety standards apply, and it covers a wide range of shapes. A decode returning it is telling you how the vehicle was certified. It is not telling you the body style, the number of doors or the seating layout, and it should not be read as a verdict on whether something is “really” an SUV.

Nor does the class field cross-check the badge for you. It describes what the register expects of vehicles issued numbers under that code. Confirming that a specific vehicle matches its description is still a job for a decode of that vehicle’s own number, read against the advert, and then for your own eyes on the vehicle itself.

The fifth vehicle type with no code behind it

There is a wrinkle in this entry worth pointing out, because it is the sort of thing that makes two sites disagree about the same make.

The register answers two different questions about vehicle types, and they do not return the same answer here. Asked which vehicle types it holds for the make, it lists five: Passenger Car, Truck, Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle (MPV), Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) and Incomplete Vehicle. Asked which classes the twenty-two codes are filed under, it returns four. No code in the entry is filed as Low Speed Vehicle (LSV).

That is not a contradiction, and it is not an error in either field. The two fields are answering different questions: one is about what the register holds for the make, the other is a tally of how the make’s manufacturer codes are classified. A page that quotes one number and a page that quotes the other will look as though they disagree, when both are reporting accurately from the same source.

Across the thirty-six makes in this read, two list Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) among their vehicle types without holding a code filed under it, and this make is one of the two. J, 4, M, 6 and T: the first character follows the country field

Read the twenty-two codes as a list and a clean pattern falls out of them. Fifteen codes are recorded against Japan and every one of those begins with J. Three are recorded against the United States and all three begin with 4. Two are recorded against Thailand and both begin with M. The single Australian code begins with 6, and the single Portuguese one begins with T. Across all twenty-two, the leading character and the country field agree without exception.

That is worth knowing because it answers a question buyers ask constantly, and answers it narrowly. Two vehicles can wear the same badge, sit on the same forecourt at the same price, and open with different characters. The difference is where the number was issued from. It is not a trim distinction, not a market distinction, and not an indication that one is the proper version and the other something lesser.

Now the caution, and it is the one this page cares most about. The country field records where the registering entity filed. It does not record where a vehicle was assembled, and it should not be quoted as if it did. The clearest proof of that sits inside this entry. MITSUBISHI MOTORS CORPORATION (MMC) appears against two different countries: twelve of its codes are recorded against Japan and one, ML3, is recorded against Thailand. Meanwhile the other Thai code, MP3, is filed under a different name entirely, MITSUBISHI MOTORS (THAILAND) CO LTD. One name across two countries, and one country with two names on it. The honest use of the first three characters is therefore narrower than it is often described, and still worth having. Position eleven of an individual number is the plant character, but the register does not publish the key that turns it into a plant name, which is why this page prints no plant table. Reading the opening dates without over-reading them

Every code carries the date it was registered, and put in order they make a rough sequence of when the filings were opened rather than a history of anything else.

Thirteen of the twenty-two were registered during 2015. Four of those share a single day, 23 April 2015: JA3 and JA4 under MITSUBISHI MOTORS CORPORATION (MMC), and 4A3 and 4A4 under MITSUBISHI MOTORS NORTH AMERICA. The truck and bus company’s three codes all fall in the same year, JL6 and JLS in May 2015 and JL7 in July 2015, as do ML3 in May 2015, 6MM in July 2015 and MP3 later the same month.

Five more codes were registered in December 2016, within a fortnight of one another: JP3, 4P3, JB4, JP4 and JJ3. Three follow in 2017 — JB7 in January, JP7 in February and the Portuguese code TYB in November. Then a gap, and a single code, JE4, registered in April 2020. That is the newest entry in the make’s file.

What that sequence supports is narrow. It shows the order in which codes were opened and it shows that one code is more recent than the rest by some margin. The register does not record how many vehicles were issued numbers under any code, so the dates rank filings and stop there. A code with an old date is not necessarily a code with many vehicles behind it, and a code with a recent date is not a warning sign: a code that appears in the public register is a code that was properly assigned, and unfamiliarity is a fact about the reader rather than about the vehicle.

One more caution before anyone builds a timeline out of these. An opening date is the date a code was registered. It is not the date a vehicle carrying it was built, sold or first titled. Codes are routinely opened ahead of use and can sit unused for a period. A date in this entry is evidence about a filing and nothing else, and it is no substitute for the model year, which lives at position ten of an individual number and is read against our model-year chart.

Seventy-nine models, and why this page names none of them

The federal register holds seventy-nine models for the make. That is the decoder’s vocabulary for Mitsubishi — the set of model names a decode can return when it resolves a specific number, across all years the register covers rather than any current line-up.

The archived pull this page works from carries that count and not the roster, so no model list is printed here. This is a smaller point than it sounds and a more important one than it looks. Every make page on this site works from one recorded read of the register, and the rule is that we publish what that read contains. Reciting a model list from memory would be indistinguishable, to a reader, from reporting the data — and filler of that kind is indistinguishable, to a reader, from reporting the data. The count is not the useful part in any case. What a buyer wants is the model returned for one specific vehicle, and that comes from decoding that vehicle’s number rather than from any list. And a model name, however it arrives, is not a trim. The register knows the model line. It does not know which engine option, which drive configuration, which wheel, which interior or which options package a particular vehicle left the factory with, and those are the distinctions that move the price of a used car by thousands. An entry with no false matches, filed under its own name

There is a trap in the way the register is queried, and this entry is not caught by it. The register’s name endpoint matches company names as text rather than resolving brands, which means asking it for a common word drags in every small builder, trailer shop and specialist converter whose registered name happens to contain that string. A reader of a raw result can easily conclude a marque holds a dozen codes it has nothing to do with, and how that noise is filtered is one reason code counts vary from page to page.

Querying the register for this make returns zero unrelated matches. Nothing else on the register is filed under a name that catches the same string, so the entry a reader gets is the entry the group actually holds. Twenty-two codes, and no strangers attached to be filtered out by hand.

The make also files under its own name rather than sitting beneath a parent group in the register. That is not true of every badge. Of the thirty-six makes in this read, eight hold no code at all in their own right, and their numbers are issued under a parent’s filing, which is why a register search on those badge names returns almost nothing useful. What the decode will not tell a Mitsubishi buyer

This is the section that does the most work, because it is where the gap between what people expect from a VIN and what a VIN actually carries is widest.

The number is a build identity. It exists so that a regulator can tie a recall campaign to a batch of vehicles, an insurer can tie a policy to an object, and a state can tie a title to that same object. It was never designed to describe a vehicle’s condition today, and it has no field for any of the following.

Service history. Nothing about oil changes, transmission fluid, brake work or the last time the timing belt was looked at reaches the register, and none of it is encoded in the number. On a vehicle maintained by independent workshops or by an owner on a driveway, there may be no central record anywhere — only a folder of receipts, which is worth asking for and worth reading properly when it appears.

Whether a recall was actually carried out. This one is worth being careful about. The federal recall lookup will tell you whether a campaign is open against a specific number, which is genuinely useful and free. What no decode does is confirm that a previous owner ever presented the vehicle. A campaign showing as remedied means a remedy was recorded; a campaign showing as open means the work is outstanding as far as the system knows. Which options are fitted. A build record can describe how a vehicle was configured when it was made, and how much of that is recoverable varies enormously between manufacturers. What no historical decode shows is a change made afterwards: an accessory added, a component swapped, a feature disabled, a wheel and tyre package replaced. Original specification and current specification are two different claims, and only the first has any chance of living in a record. Condition, mileage accuracy and damage that never reached a record. A decode reads the build. Damage enters a file only where an insurer or a state filed something, and a well-repaired collision paid for privately leaves no trace at all. What happened after an incomplete vehicle was finished. Worth adding on this make specifically, because four of its codes are filed that way. Where a second company completed a vehicle, the number belongs to the first manufacturer, and nothing that second company did is described by it.

Reading the number off the vehicle

Whatever the listing says, the number to work from is the one on the vehicle. Read it yourself rather than copying it out of an advert, and read it from more than one place.

The usual locations on a passenger vehicle are the plate visible through the base of the windscreen on the driver’s side, and the certification label in the driver’s door aperture. That label is a federal requirement rather than a manufacturer courtesy, which is why it makes a dependable second reading. Two readings that disagree is a finding in itself rather than a transcription problem to shrug off. So is a label that looks newer than the aperture around it, or fixings that have clearly been disturbed. Before anything else, run the check digit. Position nine is computed from the other sixteen characters, so a mistyped number usually fails arithmetically before it has cost anybody a journey. The records that sit around the number

The decode is the cheap part and the fast part. The record is where used-vehicle money is won and lost, and the record is retrieved rather than decoded — it lives in title files, insurer reports and recall databases, keyed to the number rather than encoded inside it.

Three retrievals do most of the work, in this order. The federal recall lookup is free, per-vehicle and authoritative on open campaigns.
